Several earthquakes struck northwestern Afghanistan on Saturday, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 3,000 lives, with emergency rescue efforts ongoing. The quakes and numerous aftershocks primarily affected rural areas around the city of Herat, with many hard-hit villages being difficult to access. Rescue operations are further hampered by unstable relations between the Taliban government and the international community. Since the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, there have been significant cuts in aid and a decline in healthcare services, leaving limited resources and expertise available for rescue and recovery. Many of the candidates we support, our team members, and our partners have loved ones in Afghanistan. Our thoughts are with them and all those affected by this disaster. If you are able to contribute to rescue and recovery efforts, consider donating to one of these organizations:
- Islamic Relief Canada is active in Herat, providing health assistance and assessing urgent needs.
- Farhad Darya and Aryana Sayeed, renowned Afghan artists, have organized a GoFundMe campaign. Donations will be directed to 8AM Media, a non-profit arm of Hasht-e Subh Daily Newspaper, which will collaborate with other non-profits to distribute funds locally in and around Herat.
- The World Food Programme has prepared food parcels for 20,000 people and aims to reach up to 70,000 earthquake-affected individuals with food or cash assistance.
- The International Rescue Committee is working with NGOs to deliver immediate aid and medical care.
Please research the organization and campaign that aligns with your values before donating.
